According to Digitimes Research, global smart mobile phone shipments are expected to fall below 1.5 billion in 2019. Since the launch of the first iPhone and the expansion of the Android ecosystem, the market has been growing at an incredible rate, but today it has begun to decline.
Counterpoint Research estimates that there were approximately 1.55 billion smart mobile phone sold worldwide last year, slightly higher than the 1.51 billion in 2016. The same company reported that shipments in the first quarter of May fell by 3% year-on-year and by 2% in the second quarter.
As a result, the market may see its first annual decline in 2018, followed by a small drop or stagnant shipment next year. Fortunately, because Digitimes expects the “alternative demand” for 5G smart mobile phone to “start to appear in 2020”, there will be some bright spots in the decline process.
It is predicted that smart moile phone shipments will rebound to more than 1.5 billion this year and about 1.7 billion units in 2023, indicating that the industry is still growing overall.
